I must admit, Miniar - I'm almost jealous that I didn't come up with that definition. I've been trying to phrase it properly for quite a while, I think you did quite well.

Well said.

"Otherkin are people who believe themselves to be something other than a human being on a spiritual, psychological, energetic and some even on a biological level, and choose to identify with that non-human fragment of themselves to the point where they count it as a permanent and ingrained part of their personal mythology and/or identity." ~ Miniar/Freetha

I say that definition seems to fit pretty well. Yet I don't consider myself otherkin anyways. I do believe that I have had many other lives and that some have been nonhuman. However so do a lot of Buddhists and Hindus, but I can't say I've seen them labeled as otherkin very often, lol. I don't find past forms to be a important point about myself, and not useful information (I find occupational information like "doctor" or "biologist" to be more useful bits of personal information). I believe that a soul experiences being within the forms of many sorts of beings, and these experiences help shape it, but when it comes down to it a soul is a soul IMO, I don't believe a soul to be every form (or a particular one) it has experienced.

As far as otherkin being a "belief system" I say it really only doesn't qualify for that in that it's not quite enough to be a full "system," but it is clearly a belief of sorts. And as far as being "religious" that depends on your working definition of "religion." Under a common working definition, American football technically is "religion" per se. And as the idea of otherkin deals with what many consider religious topics (ie. past life, the soul), I would classify it as a religious belief, although not one exclusive to others (this thought also makes since when you think about the fact that the idea of otherkin (specifically souls and past lives) is incompatible with most concepts of atheism (as far as I see it that is)).

The beauty of my definition is that it states, "otherkin are X" and not "all X are otherkin"

I believe 'otherkin' to mean one who does not believe themselves to be human on the spiritual side. I do not believe furries to be otherkin( unless they are furry AND an otherkin type) anyone who is not spiritually a human I consider to be otherkin

Personally, I go with the definition that is both broadest and most literal. Otherkin = kin to that which is Other (than human). Same as animalkin = kin to that which is animal, elfkin = kin to that which is elven, and demonkin = kin to that which is demonic. And I use the word kin both in its sense of family relations, and in its sense of two things having the same nature.
