A Guide to Posting

So you think you might be otherkin, or perhaps you are just curious about what it entails. Even if you have no definitive answers yet, asking questions is a great place to start. Before you do so, though, you might want to take a gander at the rules here: http://otherkincommunity.org/wiki/The_Otherkin_Community:Rules_%26_Regulations That should help keep you from getting in trouble.

Our Values

These include, but are not limited to:

-Respecting yourself and others
-Thinking for yourself
-Thinking/Behaving rationally, logically, and objectively
-Questioning yourself and others
-Being honest and fair
-Following the rules

If you do not agree with these, then you may want to reconsider joining the forums.

Making your introduction

One of the first things you might want to do after registering, is make an introduction thread in the introduction category, found here: http://otherkincommunity.net/forum94 It’s not a requirement, but it is a great way for everyone to get to know you.

So what should you include? Here are some ideas:
- what brought you here
- a bit about your background
- what your personality is like
- what you hope to gain out of this forum
- etc.

There is no set outline for an introduction, but remember that this is how you will first be perceived in the community, and many people say that first impressions count.

A golden rule on this forum is: if you are unsure of your kintype (if any at all) don’t assume you are any particular kintype. It is much better received here to state that “I do not know”.

However, if you believe for sure that you know what your kintype is (again, if any), be aware that you will be questioned.

Being asked questions and thinking objectively

The Otherkin Community is a bit different than some other forums, in the fact that we have a somewhat different approach. We question, challenge you to think objectively, and to be your own skeptic. Why do we do this? First and foremost, it is a sign of respect. This is our way of treating you as a rational, intelligent human being, capable of thinking for themselves.

Being asked questions is not a way of attacking you here. Not only do we want clarification, so we can understand where you are coming from, but also we want you to be sure in your answers. You must be prepared to have your ideas challenged by other members, especially if your ideas seem illogical or you can not supply reasons and a logical process for you coming to this idea. It happens to all of us; we are all asked questions here. If you have a reasonable, logical explanation behind what you believe, then the objective questions presented to you should only make you more sure of yourself.
Remember, we want to guide you on your path, but we can only do so much if you refuse to consider new ideas. And being asked questions is not an attack; it is a sign of respect.

Criticism

Everyone on this forum is entitled to their personal beliefs. If a person does not believe something you say, that is NOT equivalent to an insult. (note that insults are breaching the respect rule).

The best response to criticism is to remain calm, and not let your emotions dictate what you post. If need be, take a few moments away from the computer to cool down. Then you can respond accordingly.

If you feel that you are being attacked, you can always report it.

Reporting A Post

If you find that a post is against the rules, we ask that you report it immediately. In the top right-hand corner of each post, there is a red triangle with a “!” in it. Click on this. It will bring up a new page. On it, the member’s name and the posting message will already be there. All you have to do is type a description, and on the list of rules, check which one(s) were breached.

Tone

We ask that you try to keep your respectful at all times. This can be done by keeping sarcasm and profanity to an absolute minimum, as well as being a good judge of your words. However, it should be noted that you should try not to interpret tone in another’s post when there isn’t any, as this could save you from needless arguments.

Grammar, Spelling, and Punctuation

As not all of our members here have English as their first language, we ask that you do your best to use proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. We can understand if these are not your best areas, and there are some simple solutions. For example, typing your post in a program such as Microsoft Word, then copying and pasting it, will fix the most basic errors. Also, there are some free websites that can help as well, such as http://www.jspell.com/public-spell-checker.html There are also browser alternatives that you can set up to check your spelling as you type, such as Firefox and Google Chrome We would really appreciate it if you tried your best with this, so as to be fair to everyone, non-native English speakers as well.

Conclusion:

It’s a lot to keep in mind, but it will be well worth it. If you decide to join The Otherkin Community, then welcome! We look forward to seeing you around the forums. Hope you enjoy your stay!
