 NASA's take on 2012
Reply with quote Report this post

Another thread prompted me to post this link, since it does hold some relevance to the beliefs of certain individuals that may be a part of this community:

http://news.slashdot.org/story/09/11/17/1729247/NASA-Attempts-To-Assuage-em2012em-Fears?from=rss

Now, as with everything, I would like to remind everyone to remain open to arguments from both sides. While there are certain arguments that cannot be won due to overwhelming evidence to the contrary (such as the planet Nibiru discussed above), it is important to also realize that studies are not always correct and do not foresee all effects. The above article is highly bias to the scientific community.

I must also mention that readers must keep an open mind especially to the above material, as it seems to go largely ignored.

The whole stuff about 2012 has actually been around the internet long before that movie.

Yeah - this movie just served to spark it a bit.

I'd find this 2012 nonsense hillarious if it weren't for the fact that wonderful, albeit gullible people were seriously contemplating suicide because of it.

Not sure why people need this 'nibiru' hype myself. You want horror on a global scale? The northern ice cap will. be. gone. by 2015. and that's optimistic. All that beautiful ice destroyed and we can't even do anything about it any more, only work to one day heal the climate such that a new one will freeze. Not to mention the sea level rising thanks to aforementioned melt. I've seen a simulation of what britain will look like after the sea level rise and I actually experienced nausea at the thought of all those places that I know being swallowed by polluted water. Did I mention that a vast percentage of humanity live on or near the coast by preference? awful.

Apologies for derailing the topic and talking about stuff that's not fun (uncharacterisic for me), I just thought it aught to be said.

The Mayan Prophecies was published in the mid-90s. It doesn't pre-date the internet, of course, but it certainly pre-dates the mass popularity of the internet and as such 2012-mania can't really be characterised as an internet phenomenon.

Erich von Daniken was putting forward similar ideas long before, though off the top of my head I don't recall how much he touched on 2012.

Pardon me, but I'm a one of the "twilight" crowd myself))) you can see me running and screaming "Edward noooo!" everywhere? Nope... really, it depends on the person, is he-she sane enough.. or smth.... the same goes to 2012, the sane ones are watching it, thinking it over, and letting it go, as it is, as i said before - just a movie. The least sane people.. oh well...

I know the whole info was already there, and that was almost THE point)
