The Mad Tree

So I'm really only posting this because Archer posted a dream LOL And I've been wanting an opinion on this for a while and everyone I ask has no clue.

Oct 23, 2009

I was standing at the door in the dining room and Dad was in the kitchen. The door wasn't a sliding door, it was hinged instead. I was looking out the window and I saw this strange tree. There were branches on each side (closest to the house, furthest, and on the left when you looked at it) and they were evenly spaced in a straight line. The branches had creatures coming out of them, and the top branch on the side by the house was a dragon. As I was watching it, I saw it moving and I thought it was swaying in the wind. But I looked more closely and saw it blinking its eyes and opening and closing its mouth. I called Dad over and said, "I think it's alive."

Dad pulled me back from the window and said that I shouldn't stand so close, because it was dangerous. Then the dragon did something and the door swung open. Dad left to go outside and close the door (he couldn't from the inside, it was too dangerous, but he could put on some kind of armor and close it safely from the outside, even though it meant being closer to the tree). As I watched from the window, this kid, a boy about 15 or so, wanted to prove himself and close the door.

I didn't see what happened, but the door closed and I saw this adult man walking away, he was the one who closed the door. The boy was picking himself off the ground, I guess he'd been knocked down. But he still wanted to prove himself, so he made a shield with two horns coming out of it, and had some kind of weapon in his right hand, I didn't really see what it was. Then he went to the tree and chose a creature off of it.

The creature appeared (I think maybe it flew in, but I'm not sure) and it was a half-man, half-bird. It reminded me of Native ceremonies where someone wears the skin of an animal and dances. It moved like that. But it wasn't a man wearing animal skin, it was a complete creature. It moved like a man and had arms and legs, but the head was of a large black bird, and the arms were wings, and it was covered with black feathers.

The boy attacked the creature and it looked like he was winning. He was beating on it and it was getting hunched over and looked like it was in pain. Then the boy dropped his shield a bit to get in a particularly strong blow, and the creature immediately straightened and turned around. I can clearly remember the look on the boy's face as he looked into the creature's face for the first time. He was stunned and terrified. His eyes were wide and his face was slack as he just stared, dumbfounded. Then the creature hit him in the chest and knocked him down. The creature then grabbed the boy by the foot and dragged him away.

I couldn't let the creature have the boy, so I went out and tracked them to what seemed to be a Native village of some kind, but it was more like everyone was sitting around doing things, there wasn't any kind of shelter or anything. I don't remember if I got caught before I went into the village or if I'd started to walk through, looking for the boy first. But the point is that I was caught. I was taken to where the boy was, and there was also what I guess was the chief, a Native man who seemed to be the leader. He was trying to teach the boy how to speak their language, but the boy was badly mangling it.

There was another Native man there, but while the chief seemed like a decent enough person, kind in a way, and looked well-kept, this man seemed to ooze malevalence and evil, and he was ill-kept with dirty, stringy hair and sallow skin. While the chief was in control of everyone else, this man was obviously in control of the chief (although the chief just as obviously wasn't happy about it).

The chief started telling me about the tree, which they called the "mad tree." The tree wasn't meant to hurt anyone, it was supposed to get their message across, that they had power. He and creepy guy were talking about how, with the tree in our yard, not enough people were seeing the tree and getting the message. The chief suggested moving the tree into the valley, but creepy guy said that nobody would see it if it was in the valley, so they had to move it to the top of a hill, where everyone would see it. The chief didn't want to, but he reluctantly agreed, because creepy guy had power over him to make him do what he wanted.

Then the chief went back to telling me about the tree, and he said that all the creatures on the tree were once human, but they used their power to change them into these half-animal creatures, and put them in the tree. I asked him how they did that, and the answer was, "You'll see for yourself. We're adding you and your friend to the tree."

I woke up at that point, and wouldn't let myself go back to the dream. I knew it wasn't finished, but it scared me, so I didn't want to go back to sleep.

The things about the dream that really stood out to me, and still do, are the bird-man and the mad tree. There was a significance in the dream to the name "mad tree" and I can very clearly see it in my head. If I had the ability to draw, I'd be able to draw it exactly how it was in the dream, it was that clear.

So. Any thoughts and opinions? LOL
