I don't understand the whole points thing. Can someone give me an explanation for their use/purpose?

"Points" are a feature of some bulletin board softwares. Usually one gains points by adding to a site's content, such as posting on message forums, adding articles and reviews, etc. It can be used as a way of gauging how much time and effort one has put into being a member of a community, for one thing. I think theoretically a board admin could use amount of points as a way of controlling access to certain board features. It doesn't seem to be something we really pay attention to here, so maybe Clodaus just never turned this feature off, or it can't be turned off, or he has some future purpose for it.

It's a rewards system for when I create the new site - it currently has no use. Later it will be used for prizes, additional features for the Otherkin web hosting, etc.
I'll have more info on it in the months to come. For now just save up  You get them from posting - short posts give no points, longer posts give no points.
